- W3124998434 abstract "k s estoration of blood flow to ischemic tissue results n ischemia reperfusion injury (I/R). Preconditioning, njury-induced protection from subsequent injury, has roved to be a powerful form of protection from I/R. lthough preconditioning was described 20 years ago, ts clinical application has been disappointingly limited. ostconditioning, injury-induced protection from preious injury, is a recently described novel approach to ttenuate I/R that may have greater clinical potential. nitially recognized in canine hearts subjected to a series f ischemia and reperfusion cycles at reperfusion onset, ostconditioning has been demonstrated in multiple pecies and is applicable from remote organ systems. ostconditioning represents a novel yet potent protecive algorithm, and comparisons with preconditioning ay elucidate greater mechanistic understanding and llow safe clinical application. This review: recalls the istory of endogenous adaptation and how it relates to he development of postconditioning; outlines the diferences in algorithmic characteristics; summarizes the imilarities in cardioprotection conferred; compares and ontrasts the mechanisms of preconditioning and postonditioning; explores the potential of using postcondiioning clinically; and summarizes all human precondiioning and postconditioning studies to date." @default.
