The beneficial impact of nanoparticles (NPs) used as fertilizers on crops is reflected primarily in higher yields, but NPs could also positively affect the quantity and quality of secondary metabolites such as phenolics or flavonoids showing antioxidant activity, which finally contributes to the enhanced quality of food. Recently, in the era of rapid climatic changes, increased attention is devoted to the potential of NPs in alleviating the adverse impact of various abiotic stresses on crops causing significant production losses. However, NPs could also be used in unconventional ways, for example, in combination with components of the photosynthetic apparatus in biohybrid systems able to generate photocurrent, which could be used for solar energy harnessing in the future. Moreover, by the insertion of NPs into plants using a nanobionic approach, non-native functions of plants could be achieved resulting in altered/amplified functioning of plant tissues or organelles, and such plants showing augmented functions could be used, for example, as photonic sensors recording the plant metabolic status of various compounds in the environment in real time. This chapter is focused on four topics: (i) the use of NPs for the improvement of valuable secondary metabolites production in vitro, (ii) application of NPs for the mitigation of abiotic stresses (drought, salinity waterlogging, soil acidity, UV and γ-radiation, heat, cold, frost, and toxic metal stress) in plants, (iii) use of photosynthetic apparatus components in biohybrid systems designed for photocurrent generation and (iv) plants with augmented functions created using NPs and the nanobionic approach." @default.
