- W3125182011 abstract "Background: Malaria continues to be a major health problem despite various interventions to eradicate the disease. Cerebral malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum is responsible for most malaria-associated deaths. Majority of these deaths occur in children under five years mostly from sub-Saharan Africa. Currently, there is no available information to predict who will recover from cerebral malaria, or who will die or who will convert from UM to CM. This knowledge would improve CM survival and reduce CM. Methods and materials: This study was a cohort study using children from 2- 12 years from five different hospitals within the greater Accra region. Techniques used in the experiment include flow cytometry, ELISA and human magnetic luminex assay Results: The study showed that CM patients have higher damage in their endothelium than UM patients. CM had 73.4% damage and 25.7% repair and UM had 29.1% damage and 70.9% repair, p < 0.0001 between CM and UM groups. Again, high soluble triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells (sTREM-1) and decreased neuropilin 1(NRP-1) levels are associated with CM pathogenesis. Conclusion: The study could predict that CD8+ T cells (95%CI = 0.726), EPC level (95%CI = 0.712), and CD15 cells (95%CI = 0.86) are important in recovery from CM and/or prevention from development of CM." @default.
