- W3125601924 abstract "Supraglacial debris complicates automated and semi-automated mapping of glacier terrains in the Greater Himalayan Range, an area recognized for contrasting signals of its glaciers toward climate change. Despite exhibiting such fluctuating behavior of glaciers, the Greater Himalayan Range lacks literature on mapping of its glaciers. In this rugged and data-scarce region, the present study attempts to propose a simple generalized knowledge-based approach for mapping of supraglacial covers that requires two input datasets (satellite image having optical and thermal bands and a DEM). In this study, spectral indices were designed by utilizing the spectral properties of supraglacial covers, glacial topography, and thermal properties of debris. Such indices (Normalized Difference Snow Index [NDSI], Normalized Difference Snow Ice Index [NDSII], reflectance difference [RD]) and corresponding threshold values facilitated sequential discrimination and mapping of supraglacial covers (viz. snow, ice, ice mixed with debris). In particular, the debris surface temperature estimates of debris cover supported in discriminating supraglacial debris from periglacial debris and other non-glacier areas because of the temperature difference between them. The proposed knowledge-based approach resulted in an overall accuracy of 86.33% (which is quite high compared to the 73.33% overall accuracy from maximum likelihood classifier) for the representative glacier, called the Pensilungpa glacier. The proposed classification technique with freely available image-based information is observed to be faster than the manual delineation and proved suitable for delineating the boundaries and systematic mapping of supraglacial covers of debris-covered glaciers in the study area over different time periods. Although the proposed approach involves multiple thresholds for different parameters which are scene-specific, the methods of selecting the thresholds would remain the same." @default.
