- W3125894712 abstract "Background: Dermatophytosis is a major health dilemma affecting billions of people in the whole world (Bitew, 2018). There is also an emerging problem of infection caused by Candida albicans and therapy is effective only in 15–40% of patients. Fungal infection greatly contributes to skin and mucosal infections, allergies and billion deaths each year affecting humans and even our beloved animals (Gow and Netea, 2016). Incidence of dermatomycosis and candidiasis has been dramatically increasing in recent years and limited antifungal drugs are available. Methods and materials: The Betle oil from the leaves of Ikmo (Piper betle) was extracted by hydrodistillation. Freshly extracted Betle oil was yellow in color and lighter than water with a percentage yield of 0.2% w/v. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the oil was determined using Agar Dilution method supplemented with Tween 20 for good diffusibility. Identification of skin fungal isolates was performed using the Riddle method. Gross colony characteristics, microscopic, morphology, micro- and macroconidia were identified and documented. Fluconazole (FLZ) was used as antifungal control drug of choice. Results: Ikmo (<0.01–0.16%) has a more potent antidermatophytic activity than Fluconazole (0.3% to >1.25%) against T.rubrum, T.mentagrophytes, M.gypseum, E.floccosum & C. albicans. Conclusion: The essential oil was found to have significant antifungal activity against dermatophytes and Candida albicans. Growth of control strain C. albicans ATCC 14053 was inhibited at 0.08% betle oil. Resistance to antifungal drugs is increasing thus the use of Ikmo (Piper betle) essential oil might prove to be a breakthrough in the advancement of antifungal science in the field of medicine." @default.
