- W3126674583 abstract "Photoelectrochemical (PEC) technology is a promising method to combat carbon dioxide (CO2) emission, as it offers a solution to both solar energy capture and storage simultaneously. An ideal PEC device employs a semiconductor to absorb solar photons and convert them to electrical charges, then uses the charges to drive electrochemical reactions at the surface to produce renewable fuels and chemicals. While this concept has been proposed for more than half a century, developing a real device with high efficiency, high stability, and low cost has been challenging. Recently, the advances in material engineering, especially the implementation of nanoscale-architecture and interfacial engineering, have proven to be successful strategies in improving the overall efficiencies of PEC devices reported in the literature. In this chapter, three PEC applications, namely, (1) water splitting for hydrogen (H2) production, (2) CO2 reduction to hydrocarbons and oxygenates, and (3) biomass valorization for biochemicals and H2 production are presented. The device design criteria, nanomaterial development strategies, recent progresses, and the challenges and limitations of each application will be discussed." @default.
