- W3127003232 abstract "Abstract A population adapts to various environmental stresses by changing its geographical distribution or genomes. Therefore, population genomic data provide insight into adaptation in the form of genetic population structure and association of SNP allele frequencies with measured environmental variables. In this paper, we propose an exploratory approach that captures the essential events throughout a population’s history. The input data consisted of SNP allele frequencies, environmental variables, and average trait values for each local subpopulation. The core component of our approach is correspondence analysis that maps the subpopulations in the cloud of SNPs, environments, and traits; their relative locations represent the population structure. Population-specific FST values enable inference of the history of geographical distributions. By highlighting significant associations, we obtained insight into the environmental stresses that the population encountered, traits that were affected by the stresses, and genes that enabled the population to adapt to the stresses. The potential usefulness of our exploratory approach was tested by a detailed analysis of simulations and a public dataset of wild poplar in northwestern America. The wild poplar analysis depicted the history of range expansion from inland to coastal areas and northern extension and identified the genetic background underlying adaptation to the local environments. The R codes for our representation method and simulations of population colonization used in this study are available in the Supporting Information." @default.
