- W3127946166 abstract "Caffeine is the most commonly used drug in the world. It has been implicated as a cause of, or contributing factor to, a range of diseases, and conversely has been utilised as a prescribed therapy. An individual's response to caffeine is dependent on their genetic make-up. Caffeine can enhance mood, promote wakefulness and may improve athletic performance, but it is also implicated in feelings of anxiety, hyperactivity, nervousness and sleep disturbance. There is no robust evidence that moderate caffeine intake increases the risk of developing hypertension, cardiac dysrhythmias, myocardial infarction or cancer. It is recommended that the maximum daily consumption of caffeine does not exceed 400 mg, which equates to around four cups of coffee. If caffeine is being used to manage tiredness or stress, an individual should be encouraged to address the underlying causes for this, rather than automatically reaching for a caffeine hit." @default.
