- W3128014721 abstract "SUMMARY This review outlines some of the putative pharmacologic mechanisms of a few of the most common and newer inpatient and outpatient anesthetics and analgesics used in the practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery. These pharmacologic mechanisms have been discussed in the context of their inhibitory modulation of pain transmission in the CNS. An important observation of both behavioral and biologic studies has been the selective interaction of putative neurotransmitter-receptor subtypes by these anesthetics and analgesics, especially receptors whose endogenous neurotransmitters are known to mediate pain—SP, NMDA, and AMPA; inhibit pain—mu, delta, and kappa; and inhibit neural transmission—GABAA and GABAB. Understanding general receptor-effector interactions helps the clinician predict the indications and effects of many of the drugs used in oral and maxillofacial surgery. A summary of the receptor-mediated actions for drugs currently used for inpatient and outpatient anesthesia and analgesia is provided in Table 7." @default.
