- W3128301905 abstract "Scientists at ICAR-CMFRI often encounter questions on the changes in resourceabundance and distribution in the coastal waters due to climate change. But,there is lack of coherent studies in northern Indian Ocean to scientifically quantifyand predict the impacts of climate variables on fisheries resources. The absenceof scientific information becomes a major limitation to policy planners in theirattempt to explain the magnitude of climate change impacts on oceans and seas in future andthe possible measures that could be adopted to tackle them. Therefore, an effort is made in thisdocument to quantify the future alterations in potential climate variables of the northern IndianOcean and infer the possible effects it can have on the marine flora and fauna. This document is meant to address a global audience. Therefore, efforts are made to incorporateglobally approved climate change model results in the study to understand the futurechallenges of marine ecosystems in the northern Indian Ocean. The long-term forecasts onmajor environmental variables such as Sea Surface Temperature (SST), pH, mean sea level, sea surface salinity, rainfall and chlorophyll were examined for assessing the changes and theplausible effects on the resources. The resulting possible changes on the quantum of productionand changes in essential fish habits are deliberated in this special publication. The cascadingeffects of productivity changes, vulnerability of certain sensitive ecosystems such as the coralreefs and the social/ community impacts of such changes are discussed. Obvious changesregistered in the marine resources during the last two decades, future changes with short-terminterim breaks for 2030, 2050 and 2080 are also included in this. All these studies have to be addressed in the organizational or institutional framework ofgovernance existing in the country. Therefore, a dedicated section with recommendations orpossible strategies is also presented. There are probable solutions or adaptation strategies forspecific challenges. This document can serve as a scientific guideline for effectively implementing it." @default.
