- W3128911024 abstract "Nanomaterials, owing to their nanometric size, exhibit quantum confinement effects resulting in unique properties completely different from their bulk counterparts. Such nanomaterials are ideal, due to their high surface-to-volume ratio, for applications involving surface reactions. Dangling bonds on the surface make them extremely reactive and good candidates for use in environmental pollution sensing and remediation. Rapid industrialization and excessive use of chemical pesticides to address the food requirements of the burgeoning world population have resulted in the widespread contamination of soil and groundwater. Engineered nanoparticles with properties tailored for detecting trace amounts of chemical and biological contaminants can pave the way for the development of efficient environmental health diagnostic systems. Semiconductor nanomaterials can effectively minimize environmental pollution through heterogeneous photocatalysis. Apart from diagnosis and remediation, nanomaterials are also capable of providing nutrients to aquatic life." @default.
