The development of new innovative electrode materials is especially critical for the further improvement of lithium batteries performance – not only in terms of energy and power density but also with regards to safety, cost, and cycle life. During the past years, a variety of transition metal oxides have been extensively explored as lithium insertion compounds to identify cathode materials, combining high energy and power density with low cost and long cycle life. This chapter presents the most notable oxides as insertion compounds, and their advantages and drawbacks are considered with respect to their electrode performance. The oxides of titanium, vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt- and nickel-based oxides and copper are used as insertion compounds." @default.
