- W3129367341 abstract "The marriage of Kate Middleton and Prince William introduced an international audience not only to a non-aristocrat who married a direct heir to the British throne but to a Duchess who recycles her wardrobe. While the Duchess’ habit of re-wearing clothing is treated as a novelty, Anne, Princess Royal, daughter of Queen Elizabeth ii, has long been associated with the practice. Using the semiotics of fashion and a qualitative methodology based on content, textual, and visual analyses of two articles from the Daily Mail, a study of news coverage and reader comments about their wear-again behaviour was conducted. The results suggest that reader reaction depends upon how one interprets the responsibilities of royal status and values British thrift and the monarchy. While some posters deem outfit repeats as ‘normal’, others view it as a cynical public relations ploy designed to present the royal family as ‘middle class’ and ecologically oriented. An anti-royal narrative argues that publicity about recycled garments is rubbish, a diversionary tactic to assuage concerns voiced by taxpayers about the financial costs of the monarchy. Another narrative argues for royal privilege, endorsing the conspicuous consumption and waste of one-wear fashion. The analysis presented is framed by theories of consumption, social status, identity, authenticity, social agendas, and patterns of emulation in the era of social media." @default.
