Using the case of the relation between Mexico and the United States, it argues that the global deployment of innovation systems in the auto industry occurs under regional patterns of uneven development where the US retains the bulk of scientific and technological activity, while Mexico has been assigned a subordinate role, excluded from the creation of knowledge, despite being an important auto manufacturer.
