- W313110464 abstract "A method was used in which cylindrical nerve and muscle cells could be irradiated in a circumscribed manner, with heavy particles, under strictly controlled experimental conditions. This permitted irradiation of cell structures at different depths, that is, the membrane structures and deeper cytoplasmic structures. For this purpose Po/sup 210/ 5.3-Mev alpha rays were used; the depth of penetration of Po/sup 210/ alpha particles into the nerve fibers was slight (up to 40 in water). The irradiation doses varied from 1000 to l0000 rep. The action potentials of single sciatic fibers of the frog were obtained by means of electrical stimulation. A radiation dose of 3600 rep was capable of reducing the potential amplitude during the 30-min period of observation. With the largest dose, the action potential was suppressed in a few minutes. With the smallest dose, hardly any diminution of the action potential was noted, but rather a slight increase in the potential was observed immediately after the beginning of irradiation. The experiments show that the ionizing effect of the alpha particles acts on the processes of the axon responsible for the electrical behavior of the membrane. The interaction consists of an initial increase in the electrical activity of themore » membrane. (TCO)« less" @default.
