- W313155659 abstract "Although steel girders have been used for many years, new generation of optimized steelgirders is developed by the advances in structural and fabrication technology. Girders withcorrugated webs are used in bridges as an efficient alternativeto conventional girders with flatstiffened webs, It was also found that, the vertically corrugated girders had a 10.6% reductionin weight when compared with the beam with flat web.[1]Advantages Economical design of steel girders normally requiresthin webs. The use ofcorrugated webs is a possible way of achieving adequate out-of-plane stiffness without usingstiffeners. Particularly in bridge girders with corrugated webs(BGCWs), the corrugated websare the main elements for bearing the shear forces. Instead ofprismatic BGCWs, taperedBGCWs are currently used mainly due to their structural efficiency, providing at the same timeaesthetical appearance.Available literature shows that tapered BGCWs may be classifiedinto four typologies. Amongthese typologies, Case I and Case II are the most common casesappearing commonly near tothe intermediate supports of continuous bridges.Accordingly, in this thesis, the finite element (FE) method isemployed to investigate theinelastic behaviour of tapered BGCWs of Case I and Case II, following to the fundamentalbehaviour of such girders published recently by Hassanein et al[6].The thesis seeks, firstly, considering initial imperfection amplitudes of200/1wh. Accordingly,with euro code 3 part 1-5, annex D [12],1whis the height of the long vertical edge of the webpanel, it investigates the effect of the aspect ratio of the web panels, different flange inclinationangles and differentweb thickness.Finally, the thesis checks previously proposed design model using the results of the generatedparametric studies. Overall, the outcomes of this study are expected to provide more insightinto the behaviour of tapered BGCWs and enable accurate prediction of the shear capacity ofthis special type of BGCWs." @default.
