- W3131620636 abstract "This work focuses on the rationalization of residential water consumption (RRWC) at the city of Jeddah, the largest 2nd urban conurbation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In the context of this study (RRWC) is taken as a measure or mechanism for bridging the gap between the growing demand for water and the relatively meagre supply of this critical resource. As such the study is vitally significant due to a host of factors, that when combined together, produce an awful lot of complications. Unique among these is the ever-growing size of Jeddah’s population, its thriving economic activities along with the city’s unprecedented vertical and horizontal expansion. The main objectives of this study however include: the identification of the existing available water resources for the city in general and for its residential areas in particular. Factors impacting the rationalization of water consumption at homes constitute the 2nd main target of this dissertation, whereas the patterns of water consumption in homes represent the third main objective of the study. Stemming from this set objectives, the author formulates a number of hypotheses and attempts verifying them. Salient among these are: the presence of a wide gap between demand for water and its supply; the social, economic and religious factors impacting that supply; and the role of media in bringing down water consumption in Jeddah homes. The terminology and concepts related to the topic have been fairly highlighted with some emphasis exerted on water security as one of the fundamental components of comprehensive security. Furthermore, the author restricted her study to the city of Jeddah i.e. (spatial limits), where the study community exists (housewives). As for the temporal dimension the study covers a oneyear period (20082009/). Regarding previous works that are directly or indirectly pertaining to this study the student succeeds in reviewing 14 published works. In her review she attempts to assess those works, and pin-point the aspects of close relevance to her thesis. Additionally, the student gives sufficient room to the methodical aspects as well; data collection mechanism, including fieldwork conducted at selected parts of the city. Some completed 703 questionnaire forms out of 900 distributed are received, processed and utilized for serving the purposes of the dissertation. The dissertation, however, comprises 5 chapters, an introduction and a long list of reliable Arabic and English references, some 58 tables, 16 figures and three supplements. The main results of the study are as under: Desalinated seawater is by far the major source of water available for domestic use; the impacts of certain physical and human factors on the consumption of water are conspicuously tangible. Not only that but all related hypotheses of the study proved to be valid. Finally the dissertation makes a number of important recommendations, and envisions some futuristic trends as regards the rationalization of water in Jeddah and other Saudi big cities as well." @default.
