- W31325594 abstract "The demand curve for minerals is quite another thing. This is controlled by the growth rate of the world's population, multiplied by its per capita hunger for minerals. Both of these factors are exponential in character. For example, a report of the U. S. National Academy of Sciences on Energy Resources has pointed out that a period of 1,650 years was required for the world's population, as it existed in the time of Christ, to double in number. But less than 200 years more was required for the population to double a second time, that is, from 1650 A. D. to about 1830 A. D. It doubled again in less than 90 years, by a date early in the present century. By 1960 it had doubled again, in less than 50 years. The world's population is expected to double again in 33 years or later, that is, before the year 2000. And that year, of course, is no plateau. A doubling rate of 33 years represents a rate of growth of about 2V2 percent per year, compounded. But the growth rate of the demand for some minerals is far greater than that. Peter T. Flawn has shown, for example, that in the 80 years between 1882 and 1962 the United States annual production rate of iron ore increased 17 times; that of copper ore 26 times; cement, 4,200 times; sulfur, 11,000 times. For a current example, it is said that the world's demand for the energy minerals is compounding annually at a rate greater than 7 percent, thus doubling about every decade. As to many minerals, neither the rate of new" @default.
