- W3134055064 abstract "A main consideration for patients seeking orthodontic treatment is its duration. The desire for a reduction in treatment time is shared both by the patient and the orthodontist. In recent years various methods to achieve this have been proposed and among them corticotomy has been a popular option. In this chapter, the biological principles, the various surgically assisted approaches, and the biomechanical considerations will be presented and discussed in relation to state-of-the-art evidence. The potential benefit of a reduction in treatment time will also be reviewed with respect to the treatment of cases with severe malocclusions, especially adult patients, where a shorter treatment time would be particularly beneficial. Because the acceleration phenomenon seen with corticotomy lasts between 4 and 6 months, the benefits to treatment last for a limited time period, and also the area where it can be applied is spatially restricted. Therefore, the use of corticotomy must be carefully evaluated with respect to the additional biological and economic burdens incurred. On the other hand, corticotomy-assisted orthodontic treatment could be beneficial if an enhanced biological response is needed to support treatment especially in extremely complex cases." @default.
