- W3134101075 abstract "In this paper, a novel fuel rod design using FeCrAl cladding and particle-type burnable poison was proposed to minimise reactivity swings and achieve long-term reactivity control in order to enhance the safety of light water cooled Small Modular Reactor (LW-SMR). The proposed fuel design was implemented in a 150MWth marine LW-SMR designed based on the Russian KLT-40S. Compared to the conventional homogenous loading of fuel and burnable poison (BP) mixture, the spatial shielding effect of spherical particle-type BP results in better neutronic performance given the same amount of BP loading. Parametric studies were carried out to investigate the changes in the k-inf curves due to (i) BP particle radius r, (ii) BP packing fraction PF, (iii) number of BP fuel rods n, and (iv) arrangement of the BP fuel rods Cfg. It was shown that the use of double BP materials was preferred over single BP material in minimising reactivity swings. In the full core analysis, the combination of B4C + Er2O3 showed maximum reactivity of 0.6% Δk/k and maximum burn days of 1175 days. Combination of B4C + Gd2O3 showed maximum reactivity of 0.69% Δk/k and maximum burn days of 1301 days. It is proven that the proposed fuel design implemented in the 150MWth marine LW-SMR is able to prevent prompt critical situations where all control rods are fully withdrawn by achieving excess reactivity less than 1$ throughout the core life." @default.
