The disjoint reference effect is a linguistic phenomenon which consists in the fact that in certain sentences, such as 'Juan quiere que apruebe', the omitted subject of the subordinate verb and the subject of the main verb clause cannot be coreferential. In its first editions, the Grammar of the Real Academia Española describes this phenomenon and even considers it the main cause of the alternation between the subjunctive and infinitive clauses, an idea that will be corrected throughout successive editions. Therefore, in this paper, we intend to examine how the evolution in the treatment of the disjoint reference effect in academic grammar has been from 1771 to 1973." @default.
