- W3134967463 abstract "If philosophers and legal scholars’ reasoning is correct, advanced AI-powered robots deserve some kind of moral status, perhaps something similar to the modal status of domesticated animals. At the same time, people are worried about risks of granting rights to robots. In this Article, I have discussed a solution to address the tension. I have maintained that granting rights is not the only proper way to treat the moral status of robots. In particular, drawing upon Confucianism, I discussed how the distinctive concept of a moral agent as a rites-bearer, not as a rights-bearer, could be applied to robots. The Confucian alternative is superior to the robot-rights perspective, because it is not adversarial, but team-encouraging, unlike the concept of rights that is inherently adversarial. This article did not directly discuss legal issues (doing so is beyond its scope), but the defended view has at least one clear legal implication: Assign role-obligations to robots, but do not grant them rights.Time to rethink right about robot rights." @default.
