- W3136115108 abstract "Being a caregiver in extreme conditions, such as in pediatric intensive care or in child palliative care, is an intense experience that requires caregivers to allow themselves to be emotionally affected. The testimonies of nurses, doctors, and care assistants illustrate the ambivalence between the richness of their experience in pediatric intensive care and the taxing nature of this experience, which can sometimes lead to burnout. This article comments on the quite specific experience of caregivers in extreme environments. I use the term “function of alterancy” to refer to how an emotionally intense interaction with fragile patients can transform the caregiver, at first positively, but, if pushed to the extreme, potentially destructively. The term “alterancy,” with its twofold connotation of alteration and alterity, expresses the ambiguity between the risk of corruption by the other, to the point of burnout, and the possibility of opening up to the other, leading to a psychic transformation that can sometimes be taxing but that always makes one grow wiser. If it is perceived, recognized, and named, the function of alterancy enables the caregiver to recognize within him/herself this alteration coming from the other, and therefore to be able to fulfill the requirement that it creates: to recharge one’s batteries with other caregivers, to engage in intellectual reflection, in sublimation, in therapeutic work, in all activities capable of creating meaning. How should this function of alterancy be supported? This article will examine the role of a psychologist specifically dedicated to the medical team." @default.
