- W3136159743 abstract "The increasing application frequency of direct current (DC) voltage to various aspects has attracted much attention in its potential stimulation for petroleum engineering due to several unique advantages. Related experiments have demonstrated that an electric field improves the oil recovery in tight sandstones. However, regarding whether the variations in the pore structure of tight sandstones after being treated by an electric field exist remain open. In this study, a high-pressure mercury intrusion (HPMI) and a cold-field scanning electron microscopy (CF-SEM) were combined to study the changes in the pore structure after applying an electric field to tight sandstones. The experimental results show that DC voltage opens nanopores (<0.1 μm) due to the escape of the gas produced by the electrolysis and electro-thermal effect. The movement of minerals from the pore throat induced by electrophoresis and the escape of the produced gas enlarge the submicropores (0.1–1 μm) to micropores (>1 μm). The electrokinetic effects (electroosmosis and electromigration) facilitate the development and interconnection of micropores, triggering the formation of large micropores and fissures. However, it is worth noting that the sediment flocculation will be produced and block the micropores when a high voltage or a high concentration of solution exceeded the optimum values is employed, resulting in a decrease in oil recovery compared with maximum oil recovery. This accounts for the reason why there are optimal DC voltage and ionic concentration. This gained information can help engineers and researchers understand the evolutions in the pore structure of tight sandstones subjected to DC voltage treatment, which may accelerate the application of DC-related technology for the effective exploitation of tight sandstones." @default.
