- W3136274562 abstract "Reviews 279 communication for the B2-C1 level, as advertised, and a solid framework for admission to French university or achieving a new level of purposeful written communication. Eastern Kentucky University Randi L. Polk Cocton, Marie-Noëlle, et al. Saison 4: B2 méthode de français. Paris: Didier, 2015. ISBN 978-2-278-08110-3. Pp. 224. Alcaraz, Marion, et al. Saison 4: B2 cahier d’activités. Paris: Didier, 2016. ISBN 9782 -278-08111-0. Pp. 144. This textbook and workbook aim to prepare adult to young adult French language learners to pass the DELF B2 exam.As the CEFRL level of B2 may be thought roughly equivalent to Intermediate-high to Advanced-low on the ACTFL scale, a French language instructor in the United States can use Saison 4 to help learners transition from intermediate to more advanced language use. This transition is not inconsequential . Nuances like aspect begin to feature in learners’written and oral presentations, learners increasingly read between the lines and make inferences in their interpretation of texts, and the content of these texts shifts from basic personal needs and one’s immediate environment to real-world issues of global or professional concern. I believe Season 4 is more than up to the challenge of supporting learners as they approach advanced proficiency. Each unit in the textbook opens with a set of thoughtprovoking themes connecting a compilation of authentic documents. These documents are up-to-date, compelling, and span a whole gamut of discourse genres and lengths: from short infographics and extracts of articles from Le Monde, to video clips and audio stories from sites such as and , which learners access on the accompanying DVD and CD.All sources are cited in the textbook, and a quick search reveals the original texts to have been hardly, if at all, modified.Alongside the documents are blocks of comprehension questions (“Repérez les informations!”; “Soyez curieux”; “Posez-vous les bonnes questions!”) that guide learners to parse facts and stake out positions, firstly; then to read between the lines and make inferences, a hallmark of more advanced language use; and finally, to attend to subtler aspects of language that might otherwise go unnoticed. Language learners approaching advanced proficiency should especially appreciate this last objective, since they must take care to notice language features that are increasingly subtle as their language use becomes more sophisticated. The thematic exposition of texts in each unit is followed by Repères linguistiques, a section that explicitly addresses language forms previously touched upon. Even in this explicit presentation, however, forms are never divorced from context. In the place of a compelling news story or infographic, here language forms are presented in necessary relation to the language functions they facilitate. Learners explore tonic and relative pronouns in the context of “exprimer une mise en relief” (28); conjunctions such as “tandis que” and “même si” in light of “exprimer l’opposition et la concession”(38); and aspect in tense against the backdrop of “rapporter des propos au passé” (132). Boasting more than three hundred presentational and interpretative activities, oral and written, the workbook provides learners extra reinforcement as needed. In all, Saison 4 is consistent in marrying language forms with meaning (via real-world texts) and use (language functions), allowing for a deeper experience in language, while the concurrent emphasis on reading between the lines in the interpretation of real-world texts places the textbook squarely in what ACTFL would describe as the beginning of properly advanced language use. Paris: CLE International, 2015. ISBN 9782 -09-038021-7. Pp. 192 (+ CD-ROM). This useful text is designed to be used for either self-study or within a classroom setting. I used some selections with a level 1 classroom as a supplement to our studies. I do not have a textbook for this class, so it was a useful resource for my students. It appears that it would be easy to use by an individual for either review or an introduction to French. There are eighty“chapters”within the..." @default.
