- W3136453006 abstract "Welcome to the first issue of JOR Spine in 2021! We, the editors, thought it was a good time to take stock of where we are and where we are heading as a journal. Indeed, this is a critical year for JOR Spine, as we finish our transition from concept to reality, and finalize our metamorphosis into THE home for the publication of the very best spine research. Since the JOR Spine first launched in late 2017, growth has been remarkable, based on the excellent buy in from the Spine community. We have seen year over year increases in the number of submissions (with an ~75% increase in submissions just last year) and a record number of articles published in Volume 3. As we have grown, we have also worked hard to maintain a rapid turnaround time for your submissions, with last year's submission making it to first decision within a very quick 6-week time period. JOR Spine has also emerged as an international player in the spine community, with more than a dozen countries represented in our publications last year, and a growing and international Advisory Review Board. We are actively working to amplify the international nature of the journal, with a special regional feature last year highlighting outstanding work coming out of Japan, and a current call for submissions focused on spine research in China (see https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/pb-assets/assets/25721143/JSP%20China%20Special%20Issue%20Call%20for%20Papers_final_-1607110930390.pdf). We also published two exciting special issues last year, one highlighting new “Methods, Protocols and Resources in Spine Research” (September 2020) and another from the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS), Philadelphia Spine Research Society, Fifth International Spine Research Symposium, “New Horizons in Intervertebral Disc Research” (December 2020). New initiatives are also underway, with special issues planned for each issue of 2021 (more on that to come—stay tuned!). If you have ideas for a special issue, please reach out! Here, in this issue, we highlight a new paper by John Costi, Eric Ledet, and Grace O'Connell entitled “Spine biomechanical testing methodologies: The controversy of consensus vs scientific evidence” (see https://doi.org/10.1002/jsp2.1138). In this commissioned work, based on a presentation at an ORS Spine section meeting, the authors tackle the issue that mechanical testing, while important and increasingly performed, does not have a standard protocol, and so comparisons across groups and studies is sometimes difficult. To address this, the authors systematically describe the evolution of testing methods and surveyed the international community to identify common themes and approaches. From this data set, the authors were able to arrive at a series of recommendations for best practices for spine biomechanical testing, based this scientific evidence and community input. We expect that this will be a great resource for the spine community, harmonizing practices amongst experienced investigators and providing a starting framework for those new to mechanical testing of the spine. We are so grateful to John, Eric, and Grace for their efforts on behalf of JOR Spine and our community. Finally, this past year we took another step in our progress towards full indexing, with all articles now indexed by PubMedCentral as soon as they are assigned to an issue. Applications are also now in submission or in preparation for indexing in SCOPUS and Pubmed/MEDLINE, and we are excited to see JOR Spine becoming more available and recognized by these services. Once these steps are complete, our final, and most important step, will be applying for Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE)/Impact Factor, with this submission going in later this year. This final step, which will culminate in the issuance of JOR Spine's first impact factor, will represent the realization of many years of work by many people to first initiate the journal, support its growth, and invest in its success. As always, we thank all of you for your excellent submissions and continued support of the JOR Spine, and the work that you have done to get the journal to this point. In this critical and impactful year, please think of us, read the outstanding papers published in JOR Spine, and send us your best work. Happy Spring, Rob, Mauro, and Dai." @default.
