- W3136530790 abstract "Hypersaline environments, including soil and water pose an extreme situation and may limit the growth of organisms accompanied by some abiotic factors such as, temperature, pH, pressure, oxygen, nutrient availability, and solar radiation. Water activity is a major growth-limiting factor in hypersaline environments. Diverse groups of fungi such as member of genus Wallenia, Hortea, Phaetotheca and Trimmatostroma have the ability to survive in highly saline conditions, and are known as halophilic fungi. Hortaea werneckii is the most successful halophilic black yeast and is found in whole range of saline environments, optimally at 3.0–4.5 M NaCl. Well-developed strategies of adaptation allow halophiles to sustain their survival in saline extremes. Halophiles maintain lower water potential than their surroundings through diverse mechanisms including accumulation of compatible solutes, ion homeostasis, maintaining plasma membrane fluidity, and activation of a high osmolarity glycerol (HOG) signaling pathway. Halophiles play an important role in ecological sustainability through bioremediation of herbicides, pesticides, and heavy metals in the extreme condition by production of extracellular enzymes. This chapter focuses on the survival strategy of hypersaline inhabitant fungi in extreme conditions and their ecological perspectives." @default.
