- W3136703790 abstract "Reviews 277 story shifts as yet another narrator enters the fictional arena. There is much written here about the similar desires underpinning love and writing. The Laclos references especially provide insights into the manipulation and victimization entailed by love and writing in the examples of his female characters Tourvel and Merteuil. Meanwhile, multiple fictions created by Laurens constitute a vertiginous mise en abyme of two mirrors facing each other, thus pluralizing fiction and reality. This leads readers out of the boredom supposed initially and into various fictions, their literary references, and their inter-connected realities. The fiction writer thus creates the space for the perpetuation of life in alternate realities. Trinity University (TX) Roland A. Champagne Léal, Fred. Le mont perclus de ma solitude. Paris: P.O.L, 2015. ISBN 978-2-8180-37669 . Pp. 208. 18 a. Léal combines his talents as a novelist and poet to offer the story of an unknown author who struggles with a lack of public recognition for his writing. Thinking he has been offered the perfect opportunity to address this lack of recognition, he accepts the offer to cycle in the Pyrenees with the members of the Club alpin français. The invitation, which comes in a “lettre amusante,” opens the narrative: “La rédaction de cette lettre est motivée par la lecture (enthousiaste, je vous rassure tout de suite) de votre dernier roman, Un trou sous la brèche.”Important to note that Léal’s 2006 book, makes this first-time reader of his work think that the writer-protagonist depicted in Le mont perclus de ma solitude and also named Fred, ressembles Léal and provides him with the means for self-reflection. This writer-protagonist hopes that discussions about one of his novels that takes place in the mountains will make his work matter to others. He ignores the warnings of his companion, who is the mother of his son, because he views this invitation to cycle in the Pyrenees as a means of reconciling his relationship with his hypothetical readership. Unfortunately, the trip reinforces his worst nightmares as discussions are abandoned because of incomprehension, leading to even greater misunderstandings. From the outset of Le mont perclus de ma solitude, the reader must be on guard because of the typographical layout: a burst of poetic text appears on every page in conjunction with a wide variety of fonts, no pagination (possibly because page numbers would disrupt the aesthetic effect) and occassional graphics (e.g. small musical notes and the diagram of “LE MONT BUILDING & L’EMPIRE STATE PERDU”). Despite these narrative interruptions by the poetic text, the content is continuous and linear, although sometimes trivial, burlesque, and lewd. For example, the voice of the author’s companion, in bold and a larger-sized font, intersects the reading of the“lettre amusante,”allowing“Tu fais chier!”to bracket“Très cordialement à vous.” The interruptions of the narrative by the companion remain present throughout the book, providing an intimate portrait of the author that is often funny, quite plausible, and sometimes cruel. It is via the dashed illusions of an underappreciated author, who hopes that an understanding public would arise from a cycling adventure, that Léal explores the feeling of emptiness that accompanies any act of creation. He presents a writer with all his flaws and fears. It is literary introspection and self-critical observation in a uniquely creative format. Fulbright Specialist (NY) Eileen M. Angelini Mars, Kettly. Je suis vivant. Paris: Mercure de France, 2015. ISBN 978-2-7152-39302 . Pp. 177. 16 a. Returning to the post-quake timeline used in Aux frontières de la soif (2013), Mars creates another narrative decidedly linked to the 2010 Haitian seism. Once again, the aftermath setting is purposeful, allowing Mars to explore and expose myriad psychological reverberations of the catastrophe in both content and style. As one of Haiti’s most prominent authors and a survivor of the disaster, Mars’s choice to describe the edges of the tragedy rather than crafting a novel based solely on the horrific physical event is deceptively powerful. More specifically, by targeting in Je suis vivant fringe circumstances such as sibling rivalry..." @default.
