- W3137158045 abstract "The organic cation tryptamine binds the anionic compound of cellular phospholipid membrane phosphatidylserine (PS). PS also marks degenerating axons during developmental pruning or in response to insults (Wallerian degeneration). The octanol/water partition coefficient (log Kow or logP), water solubility, and blood–brain barrier penetration are compared in this chapter for biogenic amines. Indoleacetic acid is a product of monoamine oxidase (MAO) enzymatic oxidation of tryptamine. The degradation of biogenic amines by MAO generates also a byproduct hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), one of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) participating in serotonin and tyramine signaling. The H2O2 generated during biogenic amine oxidation by MAO triggers a stress-induced mitogenic signaling. It was demonstrated that tryptamine can induce mitosis. Elevated levels of ROS have been observed in cancer cells. ROS vary during the cell cycle and peak in mitosis, resulting in mitotic accumulation of oxidized protein cysteine residues. Prolonged mitotic arrest further increased the levels of ROS and the abundance of oxidatively damaged biomolecules. Tryptamine and other biogenic amines are implicated in the redox “switches”. Tryptamine is implicated in prooxidant reaction as a substrate of a MAO-dependent enzymatic production of H2O2 and shows antioxidant effect due to a nonenzymatic radical scavenging." @default.
