- W3137351505 abstract "This chapter analyses three television series that revive English myths and make them relevant to twenty-first-century Britain's emotional and identity needs: Robin Hood (BBC 2006–2009), Beowulf: Return tothe Shieldlands (ITV 2016) and The Last Kingdom (BBC 2015–2017). All three series make explicit reference to Joseph Campbell's monomyth of the hero's journey. The heroes of myth have regained interest in times of fragile political unity and eroding faith in democratic governance. They embody shared values, norms and ideals, they are connected with national traditions and cultural memories, and they exemplify efficient leadership. The programmes discussed in this chapter emphasise the nexus between the heroic and the state of the nation at a time when Britain's national identity and cohesion were challenged by Islamist terrorism, the War on Terror, by increased fear of the “other,” embodied by immigrants and refugees, by widening social and economic gaps, by devolution and, finally, the conundrum of Brexit. The adventure series Robin Hood engaged playfully and ironically with its folk hero. The two series from the second decade of the century have a more serious tone. They show a pronounced interest in collective identity, social coherence and responsible political leadership." @default.
