- W3137456313 abstract "Lake Tana is the largest lake in Ethiopia with an area of 3050 km2 and a catchment area of about 16,000 km2. The lake is one of the 250 lakes identified as priorities for biodiversity conservation and is home to the world’s unique Labeobarbus species flock. The 18 species of the genus are the only remaining cyprinid species flock in the world after the one in Lake Lanao, Philippines was decimated because of overexploitation. Besides their great ecological importance, the Labeobarbus spp. are also economically important supporting more than 30% of the Lake Tana’s commercial fishery. Nine of these species were found to migrate every year during the rainy season to the six major feeder rivers of the lake and their smaller tributaries, which makes the migrating and returning adults as well as juveniles vulnerable to illegal fisheries and other human caused threats. Moreover, habitat degradation, damming, irrigation weirs, illegal fishing, emergence and expansion of water hyacinth and mining as well as point and non-point pollution have greatly threatened the survival of these spp. As a result, knowledge based solutions are required to ensure their sustainability. The fisheries co-management plan that has been in place for Lake Tana needs to be properly implemented. It strictly limits the number of fishermen, the seasons of fishing, and the type of gear to be used. All development activities that are taking place around the lake should consider the migratory behavior of the Labeobarbus spp. and necessary mitigation actions need to be taken. Buffer zones need to be delineated and protected from recession farming and illegal settlements. The watershed of the catchment needs to be properly rehabilitated, which could ultimately control the problems of sedimentation, non-point source pollution, and expansion of water hyacinth. Illegal sand mining in the tributary rivers and release of wastes from the surrounding hotels and other institutions should be properly regulated. In the worst case scenarios, relevant higher education and research institutions should proceed with innovative ways of captive breeding the fishes by emulating the natural environment as well as through artificial breeding techniques. Moreover, there should also be a continuous educational and awareness creation/raising efforts as demonstrated in the last four World Fish Migration Day events, which would ultimately influence decision makers and other stakeholders to take necessary measures to save these world heritages. If the above actions are not properly executed, the species flock, especially those that are already registered by IUCN as endangered and vulnerable are likely to become extinct." @default.
