- W3137633949 abstract "This chapter reviews the understanding of galaxy mergers and interactions throughout cosmic time including how both processes are important methods within galaxy formation and evolution as well as for triggering star formation and central galaxy black hole build-up. Galaxies are often found in groups, such as the Milky Way within the Local Group, but groups are one of the most common environments in which galaxies are found and are likely the necessary location for producing merging. Galaxy mergers should be relatively common in groups of galaxies compared to rich clusters or field galaxies. The galaxy merger rate is with some exceptions a theoretically derived quantity based on the time scales for galaxies to merge. Galaxy mergers could potentially play a key role in refining the knowledge of cosmology. Merging is therefore a major method for assembling and creating the stars and black holes found in galaxies." @default.
