- W3138119319 abstract "The Jefferson-Randolph Family Scrapbooks held by the University of Virginia Special Collections Library constitute an important archival and digitized source of early American secular music. Once attributed to Thomas Jefferson’s granddaughters, the scrapbooks were reattributed to the president himself. Treating the scrapbooks and the newspapers they are drawn from as valuable sources for musical inquiry, this chapter makes two significant contributions to our understanding of early American secular music. First, the scrapbooks illustrate that highly accessible forms of music-making were central to how Americans like Jefferson made sense of important events in national and local life. Through newspapers, contrafact, and ritual, literate Americans regularly created, consumed, and reported on music without musical notation. Second, the chapter exposes the research potential of such digitized sources. It addresses key challenges in interpreting newspapers as musical sources, clarifies how newspaper contents intersected with other print formats used to circulate music, and discusses how online finding aids and newspaper databases can be used to determine the extent to which a song circulated through these formats, and for how long. The chapter poses questions for future study arising from the scrapbooks and the newspapers on which Jefferson drew for his collection." @default.
