- W3138310043 abstract "What happens outside the classroom is crucial in promoting or hindering the second language learning process. In Saudi Arabia, English is a foreign language and opportunities are limited for informal use and practice. The information revolution, especially the Internet, has created new learning trajectories that have restructured the conventional ways human beings communicate and interact in today’s world. Current generations were born with the Internet, and widespread Internet availability seems to be a significant reason for a rise in English language literacy in Saudi Arabia. Activities such as posting, commenting, sharing links, and subscribing have become part of youths’ everyday life. Most of these activities are taking place in the users’ private time, and therefore knowledge and skills that arise from these activities are contributing to lifelong language learning outside of formal education contexts. The study investigates the ecology of informal English language learning in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It aims at providing an overall picture of informal contexts by pinpointing influential factors that promote, or in some cases, hinder the informal engagement with English language content in everyday life. The study is theorised in terms of: (i) Bronfenbrenner’s (1994) ecological model in order to capture the complexity of the environmental factors which influence online learning, and (ii) a sociocultural approach to human agency that draw attention to the way participants take-up or resist the affordances of the technologies and virtual communities available through the Internet. The study employs a qualitative approach based on an interpretivist paradigm that foregrounds participants’ sense-making and subjectivities. It employed semi-structured interviews and records of activities in the form of personal diaries collected from 17 university students comprised of nine females and eight males. It investigates how virtual communities are being transformed into productive contexts for English language learning that potentially could replace the need for the would-be learner to physically travel to a native English country for study. Insights from this study will provide English language teachers in Saudi Arabia with a deeper understanding of their students’ extramural learning, and suggest progressive ways to consider informal learning as part of the language learning journey." @default.
