- W3138459012 abstract "Ethnic humor is associated with the emergence of modern nation-states. The literature on humor studies does not offer a consensus on their real impact: beneficial or irritant; releasing taboos or legitimating discriminant practices. In democratic societies, increasingly plural and diverse, ethnic humor can work to reaffirm group-humorous-discourses against others or, conversely, generate intergroup speeches in which humor can serve as a cohesive device between different people. This text analyzes how the dialect “making fun of oneself” (gelotophilia) vs. “making fun at expense of others” (catagelisticism) can help us to locate this debate. It has been argued that social diversity may be an influencing factor for fun, but diversity produces different types of fun. Some may be more socially accepted than others, depending on the context in which they are happening. The conclusion of the text explains that the better humoristic contexts are those which foster a raise of humorous practices instead of fostering its censorship. Nevertheless, in order to achieve this, it is crucial that different ethnic groups are active in producing humor, have a self-reflective attitude and use self-critical humor to integrate their social diversity." @default.
