- W3138669832 abstract "Renewable distributed generation (RDG) will outstrip their traditional and dirty fossil fuel-based rivals in power generation by 2025. Renewable energy generation (REG) is set to account for 95% of the net increase in global power capacity through 2025. The key drivers of this drastic increase are relevant to the distributed generation (DG) feature, being environmentally friendly, and lower price of renewables including solar power, and wind power. But the entrance to the distribution network (DN) and their rapid extension pose significant challenges for protection strategies and systems. One of the challenges is that fault detection is being difficult in the existence of multidirectional power flows due to the RDG. Hence, conventional protection strategies based-on the unidirectional power flow need modifying and choosing a better protection strategy to overcome the challenges becomes crucial. The SWOT analysis brings together Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats of different protection strategies in one place and encourages to make the appropriate decision about them. This paper utilizes the SWOT analysis to assess and compare the directional overcurrent relay and the fault current limiter (FCL)-based strategies as the two modified active protection strategies for the DN. Finally, the paper proposes which one is a better protection strategy and what needs to do to mitigate their weaknesses and threats." @default.
