- W3138704931 abstract "As a solid material with a noncrystalline structure, a glass has short-range order, but not long-range order. Hence, there is no unit cell to form the basis of a description of its structure. For oxide and chalcogenide glasses, the dominant structural model remains the random network defined by Zachariasen's celebrated rules. With reference to that of SiO2, the usual archetype, the structure of oxide network glasses is described on the basis of SiO4/2 tetrahedra, which are very well defined, and of their random arrangement that arises from the distribution of bond and torsion angles between pairs of connected tetrahedra. After the difficulties met by microcrystalline models of glass structure have been briefly explained, the structural role of modifiers, such as Na2O, is described. The addition of modifier to a glass leads to either the breaking of oxygen bridges or to an increase in the average glass-former coordination number. Intermediate-range order, for example, the occurrence of rings, is then discussed briefly. Finally, the structure of chalcogenide glasses is presented, and their differences from that of oxide glasses are pointed out." @default.
