- W3138791807 abstract "In recent years, the number of publications describing the compatibility of medications with parenteral nutrition (PN) and/or lipid injectable emulsions (ILEs) has been on the decline, so this report was of great interest.1 However, there are several serious limitations that readers must consider prior to using these data in clinical practice. For this study, commonly used pediatric concentrations of intravenous medications were mixed in a 1:1 ratio, solely with study ILEs without PN, and incubated at room temperature for 4 hours to simulate Y-site administration. This contrasts with the common clinical practice of coadministering medications into a central venous catheter in which both PN and ILE are infusing via a Y-site connection. Although the authors did address this as a study limitation, there is still a danger that the reader may inappropriately implement their findings. Since PN formulations have an acidic pH, the findings observed by the authors could be quite different if PN is also coadministered into the same lumen as the medication and ILE." @default.
