- W3138800181 abstract "This paper documents the target-updating process of a retail firm and the shop managers' responses to this process. We find that the firm differentiates between good, mediocre and bad performers in the performance appraisal process. The firm uses this performance information to establish shop manager-specific targets. That is, shop managers get targets that account for their specific talent of improving performance. Supervisors of shop managers observe talent through subjective performance appraisals that they base on the combination of sales performance and compliance with firm directives. We also demonstrate that shop managers slow down sales levels to mitigate the size of the target update, despite ample measures taken by the firm to minimize this behaviour." @default.
