- W3139202334 abstract "Fradkin et al. (2020) apply a Bayesian framework to obsessive-compulsive disorder. In this approach, perception, anticipation, and action planning are thought to be based on probabilities, calculated by the brain relying on various sources of information, including sensory stimuli from the current situation. The authors assume that obsessive-compulsive patients have difficulty in relying on past experience in calculating probabilities, and thus must rely on current sensory feedback more strongly. If the latter is noisy or scarce, these subjects are at a loss about what to believe, to anticipate, and to do. Starting from this assumption, the authors propose explanations of several obsessive-compulsive phenomena and put these into a meaningful connection. Their Bayesian view allows them to make precise quantitative predictions about these phenomena, which would be a great step forward. Yet, in my view, their courageous enterprise still shows some gaps and obscurities. This paper critically analyzes their concept of uncertainty and its application to washing and checking compulsion. My aim is not to refute their view, but to clarify and supplement it. This is done by applying it to three clinical cases, introducing a cybernetic perspective, and discussing the legitimacy of opposing habitual and goal-directed behavior." @default.
