- W313937276 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the metabolism of the cobalamins. The chapter discusses the absorption, distribution, and excretion of vitamin B 12 and its coenzymes in ill or apparently healthy animals and humans. Vitamin B 12 is biosynthesized exclusively by microorganisms mainly as a coenzyme. The vitamin is widely distributed in meats, fish, and dairy products. Carnivores and humans obtain adequate amounts from their food. In many primates, the serum B 12 levels decrease considerably when the animals are captive. This fall may reflect the change from a diet containing small insects and grubs to one that is purely vegetable. In ruminants, microorganisms in the fore-stomach synthesize vitamin B 12 for absorption from the gut. The chapter discusses the uses of radioactive cobalamins in metabolic studies. Radioactive cobalamins find wide application in the diagnosis of malabsorption in humans and in absorption experiments on animals. Active and passive mechanisms exist for the absorption of vitamin B 12 from the gut. Malabsorption of cobalamins may result from lack of secretion of intrinsic factor or failure to absorb the vitamin complex." @default.
