- W3139739676 abstract "One would not have been surprised at all, if the 'trauma' of the philoso phers' defeat in the Einstein trial of 19551 had led to a stagnation in the discussion of the relativity theory. But on the contrary, it was in 1955 that Fock's basic work was published : 'Theory of Space, Time and Gravi tation'.2 In 1958, A. D. Aleksandrov offered his axiomatics of the relativity theory (abbreviated here as RT). The first Soviet Gravitational Conference was held in Moscow in 1961.3 The sbornik 'Latest Problems of Gravitation'4 as well as the fundamental work 'Einsteinian Spaces'5 were published the same year. The Institute for the History of Natural Sciences and Technology of the Academy of Natural Sciences of the USSR published the sbornik 'Einstein and the Evolution of Physical Mathematical Thinking'6 which is to be considered a counterpart to Schilpp's, Albert Einstein, Philosopher-Scientist. In all these works the general relativity theory (GRT) holds the dominant part. Soviet philosopher-scientists, however, are not only interested in the physical mathematical aspect of this theory, but in the classical philosophical problem of space, time, and matter. The level of the discussions differs considerably from that of the previous discussion on the special relativity theory (SRT). This is, first of all, due to the participants. The accusers in the Einstein trial (Maksimov, I. V. Kuznecov, Stejnman, Sugajlin, Ovcinnikov) had to cede to brilliant physicists and mathematicians like Fock, Landau, Lifsic, A. D. Alek sandrov and Petrov. Those philosophers, like the scientist-historian B. G. Kuznecov (Institute for the History of Natural Sciences and Technology), A. I. 2ukov, Mostepanenko, Sviderskij and Meljuxin, will certainly be careful not to make erroneous statements on physics as the 'only material istic interpretation'. On the contrary, we are confronted with a mentality which questions such central theses of Diamat as the infinity of space and time. Naturally," @default.
