- W3139848280 abstract "There is an increasing need for engineers highly qualified in specialised areas. Geomechanics is such an area, where the need for professional engineering staff is coupled to an increasing demand for support personnel. Developments in the understanding of the role of, and education requirements for, support personnel in the UK and Australia have tended towards a two- tier structure, From a consideration of the requirements of support staff in the field of geomechanics, and employer expectations, only one level of training, at the engineering associate level, is required for specialist personnel in geomechanics. Courses currently available at the engineering associate level do not provide the detailed training required for personnel to practise in the field of geomechanics. The specialised course proposed in this paper could be offered as a stream within a course currently available; post- certificate training; correspondence; or as a new course. It is suggested that one centre per state would provide adequate facilities for training and that the course would essentially consist of a core, selected from units from a course currently operating, together with specialised studies. Support from industry and the profession will be required if the proposed course is to succeed. The Institution of Engineers, Australia is in a unique position to influence the understanding of the role that support personnel will play in the practise of engineering. Such an understanding could lead to ultimate national accreditation for middle- level personnel (a). (TRRL)" @default.
