However, since it is fundamentally driven by a vicious cycle of consumerism, its current manifestation is detrimental to humans and environment due to the intensity of its operation, natural resource dependence, environmental disruption, unchecked waste, and emissions. Manufacturing is perceived as a prime driver for development and therefore needs to be sustained in the context of modern economic paradigms. Sustainable manufacturing aims to produce goods with minimum use of energy and natural resources, maximum profit, while ensuring societal health and safety throughout the product life cycle. Sustainability assessment (SA) is an essential practice for manufacturing industries to improve their sustainability performance and lately serves as a competitiveness indicator valued by consumers. Numerous SA tools have been developed by industry and academia keeping in mind various aspects of sustainability. The focus primarily has been on improving efficiency and environmental performance, whereas economic and social dimensions require further attention. This chapter focuses on discerning sustainability in manufacturing and reviews trends in SA practices in both industry and academia. Challenges in its operationalization and the need to move towards effectiveness have also been discussed." @default.
