- W3140178052 abstract "The present paper is the second of the series on the skeleto-muscular system of theAsiatic migratory locust, Locusta migratoria manilensis (Meyen), dealing with the thoracicregion including legs and wings. Comparisons are made with the African migratorylocust, Locusta migratoria migratorioides (Reiche et Fairmaire), the Carolina locust, Dis-sosteira carolina (Linnaeus) and the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria (Forskal) phasegregaria. A discussion is made on the cubital and anal veins of both the anterior andposterior wings, based on the tracheal distribution in the wing pads of the 5th instarnymph as well as the relation between the veins and the articular sclerites at the wing-base of the adult. We find six pairs of muscles which have not been reported before. They are: the anterior rotator of the coxa of the foreleg (77), the ventral levator ofthe trochanter of the foreleg (83), the second dorsal levator of the trochanter of the mid-leg (117), the anterior-ventral levator of the trochanter of the midleg (118), the posterior-ventral levator of the trochanter of the midleg (119), and the levator of the trochanteralrim of the hind leg (150). It is of interest to note that the anterior rotator of the fore-leg (77) is very important in the activity of the foreleg. Altogether there are 103 pairsof muscles in the thorax: 38 belong to the prothorax, 35 belong to the mesothorax, and30 belong to the metathorax. Furthermore, a rather detailed account is given to 16pairs of muscles of the pterothorax, of which 9 belong to the mesothorax, and 7 to themetathorax. The authors named these neoteinic muscles, as they are present in all theinstars of the nymph and in the young adult, but disappear shortly in the subsequentdevelopment of the adult." @default.
