- W3140652238 abstract "The life-table method is applied to drug histories of urban adolescents in France and in Israel in order to identify potential periods of increased risk for involvement in various legal and illegal drugs. Variations in prevalence and hazard functions for beer, wine, liquor, and cigarettes are described in Israel, and for cigarettes, liquor, and marijuana in France, for males and females separately. Risk appears to be quite constant throughout the adolescent years. Higher prevalence levels of use across cultures and within a culture are associated with earlier ages of onset. An increasing number of human processes are being investigated within a developmental perspective. While this perspective was until quite recently restricted to cognitive skills or to personality characteristics, it has recently broadened to include the acquisition of behaviors, such as adolescent delinquency (Robins and Wish), or adolescent involvement in drug use (Kandel, a,b). Involvement in various forms of drug use follows a systematic developmental sequence over time, in which use of the legal drugs precedes use of illegal substances (Kandel, a; Robins and Wish; Single et al). These findings, originally based on American samples, have been replicated in France and in Israel. In these countries, as in the United States, rates of drug use increase through the adolescent years (Kandel et al., b)" @default.
