- W3141565389 abstract "Power line communication (PLC) is one of the enabling technologies for the transformation of the power grid to a “smart grid”. To increase the reliability of data transfer, the power line modems periodically perform channel measurements. In this thesis, we examine the use of these periodic channel measurements to perform grid diagnostics.The power line cables are subject to a constant influence of the environment. Small impurities in the isolation material, either caused during manufacturing or during installation of the cables, lead to slow degradation of the insulating properties of the cables insulation material. In the end, the insulation material may fail and a short circuit may be caused. The aim of this thesis is to develop methods to complement existing techniques such as time domain reflectometry and frequency domain reflectometry, which require the cable to be taken out of service. Our methods should indicate the necessity of performing such a measurement for online cables, while reusing existing infrastructure.Common power line communication protocols and their methods to perform channel estimation as well as the regulatory restrictions present in PLC are discussed briefly. We further introduce the theory required to mathematically obtain the channel transfer function (CTF) between two modems in an arbitrary power line network, and to transform the CTF into a time domain representation that allows for detailed analysis. Properties of commonly used power line cables, and the effect of aging or degraded insulation on the electrical properties of power line cables are examined. The influence of these changes on the CTF and the respective time domain representation of the affected power line cable is examined, and compared to other influences such as changing loads and noise.Several methods to perform degradation detection and localization for different sizes of networks are proposed. Methods of compressed sensing are investigated to compensate for the limited bandwidth available in narrowband power line communication. The extend to which reliable information about the health of power lines may be obtained using these methods is elaborated. Furthermore the influence of noise and changing loads in the power line network on the proposed algorithms for detection and localization is investigated." @default.
