- W3143303676 abstract "Stress distribution in laminated composite plates with cutouts is an important consideration in aircraft design and analyses. In this paper, stress distribution under bending and twisting moments in anisotropic plates with an elliptical cutout is determined by using a combination of complex variable formulations and a variational principle. In this approach, moment resultants and displacements of anisotropic plates are expressed in terms of complex stress potentials so that the governing equilibrium equations are satisfied automatically. Further, the conformal mapping technique is utilized to treat the elliptical cutout boundary so that the traction-free boundary conditions along the cutout of the anisotropic plate are also satisfied exactly. The remaining external boundary conditions are then satisfied numerically by requiring that work done by external boundary traction and the resulting strain energy stored in the plate be balanced in a variational sense. A computer program is developed based upon the approach described above. Several examples are worked out using the computer program. Numerical solutions are obtained for various cutout sizes and material properties; the effect of cutout size and material property on the moment concentration and distribution is presented and discussed." @default.
