- W3143910839 abstract "In Vilem Mrstik's novel Santa Lucia the hero Jordan, when thinking about the results of man's disillusionment with man, says the following words: Man, once robbed of his faith in the fellow-man, does not believe in anyone any more. The novels selected for this purpose are by writers who have made a strong mark in modern Czech literature not only by expessing or reflecting the condition sociale et humaine of their time but also by attempting to uncover the possible reasons for it. In chronological order of their publication, these novels are The Axe by Ludvik Vaculik,2 The Joke by Milan Kundera3 and The Lion-Cub by Josef Skvorecky.4 When considering the history of Czech literature of the post-war period, one forgets perhaps too easily that its development differs con-" @default.
