• W3144046991 abstract "Industrial cities have been established in the kingdom to boost industrial growth. In spite of these efforts, industrial activity showed many environmental problems due to the absence of proper application of effective environmental management. The current study aims to assess the environmental management practices of industrial facilities in the Second Industrial City in Riyadh. The study has been applied on a random sample representing approximately 21% of the total number of industrial facilities in the industrial city. A questionnaire has been designed to include two parts: the first to gather technical data on the industrial facilities, and the second to collect information of environmental management of industrial plants, the scope of the study.It is clear from the analysis of the collected data that there are many negative phenomena in industrial activity performance. This causes many environmental problems due to the presence of many pollutants from the industrial activity including various gaseous emissions, as well as industrial wastewater, industrial solid waste, and noise in the absence of effective methods of treatment and final disposal, in accordance with the concept of effective environmental management.It has been found that the majority of the industrial plants have low interest with the prominent characteristics and activities of environmental management. These include: weakness of the attention of the industrial facilities to develop their performance through concerning the environment and their problems, poor cooperation with government agencies concerned with the environment as well as the presence of a multiplicity of these agencies, low environmental awareness of employees, not taken into account the hazardous sources on the environment during planning for the programs and activities, the low interest in obtaining ISO certificate that shows the attention of the industrial plants to the environment, their interest to a profit without environmental considerations, in addition to the lack of environmental assessment studies of the facility. It also shows that there are many impediments to the application of environmental management. The important recommendations to address the impediments to the application of environmental management in industrial facilities were identified.The study suggested some of the recommendations which require the participation of government agencies concerned with the environment and industrial facilities, which would give effect to the concept of environmental management to industrial enterprises. This includes: the government agencies should enforce the industrial enterprises to form environmental management unit for the application of the concepts of the foundations and principles of environmental management in industrial activities; the need for a regulatory body to monitor the implementation of environmental actions, and the problems resulting from these activities and their methods of treatment; the strengthening of cooperation between the industrial enterprises and government agencies concerned with the environment; the need for implementing environmental assessment studies for these facilities; in addition to the implementation of environmental awareness programs and training for employees of the industrial establishments." @default.
